The youth program consists of two groups: Junior Youth (ages 6-12 years) and Senior Youth (ages 13-17). The Junior Youth group focus is on cultural teachings, healthy social interaction, and identity, identification of emotions, and fostering healthy childhood and adolescent development. The Senior Youth group also focuses on cultural teachings, identity, emotions, education, community safety and fostering normal adolescent development. Below are the key activities of this program:
Provide one-on-one holistic based counselling and healing opportunities with youth and their families,
Provide workshops on family violence, residential schools, colonization, drug/alcohol, suicide prevention, sexuality education, bullying/gangs, and life skills,
Provide traditional teachings based on the Medicine Wheel, seven sacred teachings, clan / crest systems and history of Aboriginal people,
Provide Rites of Passage and other cultural ceremonies as appropriate, such as sweatlodge, sundance, pipe ceremony, smudging and sharing circles,
Provide time learning on the land through activities such as wilderness survival, berry-picking, medicine gathering, physical activities, and plant identification,
Provide art therapy sessions such as arts, crafts, ceremonial items and regalia
Provide opportunities for the youth to participate in community events which connect youth to their community, and which promote a positive-action based approach to promoting social and political awareness. i.e. Powwows, Grandmother’s walk, feasts, sports/games, babysitting (caregiver) training and similar.
